İLK İZ MONTESSORI SCHOOL EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY

İlk İz is a preschool that educates children ages 2 – 6, under Montessori’s philosophy and principles. Our specially designed and equiped school educates children in mixed age groups

in an environment which gives importance to personal development based on Montessori’s unique educational methods.

Our system focuses on teaching children what they would like to learn rather than what they are just taught. In a ‘freedom of choice’ environment an effective learning is aimed.

Education is an aid for life:

According to Montessori, education is an aid for life. Children build themselves by their own efforts and the only thing we can do for them is to help them to support their inner construction. All we can do is to help the child in his work by preparing a suitable environment according to their needs and to give the necessary guidance at the right time.

Our prepared environment is a place that is created to assist and encourage the full and natural development of children between the ages 2 – 6 .

Our materials:

There are two basic aims of our education: to help the development of the child, which depends on their inner guides and natural process, and to help the adaptation of the children to their environment and to their social community. All materials in our environment are scientifically prepared and used for this purpose.

  • Practical Life Activities: These activities are the fundamental activities of our school. They are absolutely necessary before passing onto another material. They are the activities that provide a foundation for all other activities. There are objects used where a child lives and he sees employed in his own home. The only difference is they are especially made to a size that the child can easily use. In our parctical life activities, children are given the opportunity to practice skills used in everyday life, aimed to increase children’s responsibility and understanding. ( e.g: tying shoe laces, watering plants, feeding fish ). The practical life activities are related to the real life and they create a bridge between the real life and the child.
  • Sensorial Materials: With the sensorial materials, children are given the space to freely research their environment and gain high value information while using and developing their senses. In Montessori environment we guide the child in a scientific way to classify and make clear the ideas in his mind. We help them to distinguish and select the essential information so that the child will be able to control and use them efficiently.
  •  Language Materials: Children develop their language skills with specifically designed sensorial materials through personally encouraged activities. All children create the fundamental constructions of language before the age of  three so when the child comes to our environment it is time for him to explore and enrich his language which gradually expands from spoken language to the exploration of written language.
  • Mathematical Materials: İlk iz’s aim is to give the children a sense that maths is an everyday aspect of our lives while developing their analytical thinking. Our aim is to help the child to develop his mathematical mind so that he will enjoy the maths and he will understand maths itself rather than memorizing it.
  • Culture Materials: We look at the culture as a way of helping the child to be able to understand the world thus far of the human being. We want to help the child to explore both the outer world ( botany, zoology, geography…) and the inner world ( art, music, poetry). The culture we give in the Montessori environment satisfies the child psychologically, intellectually and spiritually.

Mixed Age Group:

In Montessori environment we see a lively social life. We see the ‘ community’. By living with an a community children learn from eachother, give eachother, share and develop themselves. Our dividing walls are only waist – high partitions and there is always easy acsess from one room to the next. Our mixed age group ( 3 – 6 ages ) develops children’s natural values such as love, respect, sharing, being helpful and friendship

Freedom:

We give freedom to the child in a prepared environment which supports his natural inner development. Freedom of the child does not mean to leave the child to himself and to free him to do what he wants, whenever he wants. The child who works with the specifically designed and prepared materials becomes independent step by step. The more the child understands and have experience in the environment the more he becomes independent and this independency brings his freedom. By giving freedom to the child we help the child to fullfill his natural developmental needs and we enable the child to follow his inner guides.

The child who lives in an environment with certain guideliness and who works with the materials develop both as an individual in all aspects and also develops his social relations. Gradually a real harmony which can not be given artifically becomes a part of the child. A strong, independent personality which can fit to any situation is established.
